Location: HOUSTON, TX

This two-story penthouse is in the heart of the swank Galleria District. The project was a turn key design/build. The Houston executive contacted us after he had purchased an open white box. His vision was to create a very special unit evoking the mood of the sophisticated Art Deco period while maintaining a contemporary and livable setting. We were extremely enthusiastic of this prospect.

“This period combined modernist styles, fine craftsmanship, and rich materials”

The Results

We pulled our inspiration from prestigious designers/architects of that era such as Emile-Jacques Ruhlmann and Andre Arbus in order to select Art Deco-inspired furnishings for this home.

We selected all interior finishes and all architectural detailing. Our concept was to achieve a sleek high rise look and keep an urban feeling by leaving some visible concrete columns and exposed ceiling pipes in choice areas. We added a formal crown molding, baseboard, and door casing package to contrast the more organic elements.

One of our first tasks was to design a classic metal stair rail utilizing geometry from Art Deco elements and then finishing it in a hand painted silver leaf finish true to that era. The hardwood floors are walnut and finished in a natural stain to create a extremely dramatic look. We then painted the sheetrock walls in a soft platinum color for a great backdrop that would not only be calming, but lend itself to the gorgeous skyline views day and night.

The client had special interest in ceiling lighting that would help make a dramatic space at night for entertaining and art illumination. We selected specialty light fixtures such as the main living room chandelier which is topaz color Murano glass from Italy.

The Art Deco-inspired furnishings are a subtle mix of soft contemporary to certain showcase pieces with a strong nod to this aesthetic. Soft silver gray, slate blues, creams , camel, and warm ginger browns complete the color palette.

All of the area rugs are custom designed and hand made in wool and silk. A master bath done in marble and honey onyx complete this truly special unit that was quite a pleasure working on.
